Tropical Gastroenterology & Nutrition Group
We are a well-established clinical and research group focused on addressing Zambia's key gastroenterological and nutritional health issues.
The Tropical Gastroenterology & Nutrition Group Limited (TROPGAN) is a leading Zambian non-profit research and clinical organization dedicated to improving digestive, liver, and nutritional health in tropical regions. Originating from pioneering research collaborations in the early 1990s, TROPGAN formally incorporated as a non-profit company limited by guarantee in 2005.

Efficiency, Effectiveness, Reliability, Integrity, Safety
Mortality is still very high in children with severe malnutrition. We work to find ways to reduce this mortality
Cancer of the oesophagus and stomach affect young adults in Zambia. We want to find out why and how to detect it in time for treatment to be effective.
Infection and malnutrition lead to enteropathy, which increases the likelihood of further infection and worsened malnutrition. We work to find ways to heal this enteropathy.
Parts of Zambia are hyper endemic for S. mansoni. We work to find ways to reduce the impact on growing children and on adults.
HBV affects 5% of Zambians, leading to cirrhosis and liver cancer. We work to find ways to reduce transmission and to treat it more effectively.
Cryptosporidiosis is an important cause of malnutrition and death. We work to find more effective treatments and to reduce transmission
TROPGAN conducts clinical trials (e.g., Co-SAM, HOPE-SAM, TAME), observational studies, and translational research focusing on microbiota therapies, gastrointestinal cancers, liver health, and malnutrition.
TROPGAN collaborates with several leading institutions, including Queen Mary University of London, the Zvitambo Institute, Barts and The London School of Medicine, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
